Charlotte the green sea turtle lives at Mystic Aquarium, a division of Sea Research Foundation, Inc. The mission of Sea Research is to inspire people to care for and protect our ocean planet through year-round educational programming for families and students, research, ocean exploration and rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals great and small, like Charlotte!
Charlotte came to Mystic in 2008 from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island after she had been found stranded nearby. She had probably been struck by a boat’s propeller, which caused partial paralysis of her lower digestive tract and hind flippers. As a result, air accumulates in her hind quarters, forcing her to float with her rear end up, a condition popularly known as “bubble butt.” Though she is unable to survive in the wild now, there is a chance that, with long-term rehabilitation, she could recover and possibly be released back into the ocean in future years. Until then, Charlotte is serving as an ambassador for her species, charming and inspiring more than 725,000 guests at Mystic Aquarium each year.
