FROM HAITI TO AFRICA
Itinerary of Maurice Dartigue, a visionary educator
“Since Charles Pierre-Jacques does not have a biographer’s calling, this book is therefore not a biography of Maurice Dartigue. The author was able to avoid the pitfall of any monograph: to try to discover which element in Maurice Dartigue’s life would be the motor cause of his work. He opted instead for a cold and lucid interpretation of the man’s thinking and achievements.”
“At a time when the absence of an enlightened leadership contributes to the destruction of the very foundations of the Haitian nation, we believe it would be good that a man who
all of his life has put the greater interests of the nation above his own be better known.”
Charles Pierre-Jacques has a Ph.D. in Sociology of Education from the University of Paris V (Social Sciences Sorbonne). He did research for several years at the Caribbean Research Center of the University of Montreal, where he took an interest in the problems related to education and migration, as well as in those regarding education in developing countries. He presently teaches at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe and is a junior lecturer at the Department of Education of the University of Sherbrooke, where he leads a seminar titled Education in the Developing Countries: Challenges and Dilemmas.
