Description

This important book breaks new ground in the area of French Caribbean literature, theatre and culture. It provides a rich cultural history of recent developments in the French Antilles, showing how theatre has intersected with other political and literary movements surrounding the issue of “Creoleness” and the place of the Antilles within the Caribbean and France. As such, it is ideal for teaching in various classes on Francophone Literature and the French Caribbean, and for those interested in including the French Antilles within the broader Afro-Atlantic context.
Laurent M. Dubois, author of Haiti: The Aftershocks of History

What is striking...is the breadth of work it incorporates: over one hundred plays are discussed, many of which are unpublished, a good number being written in Creole. This is a further original aspect of the proposal—the focus on Creole-language texts, and I am unaware of any other study that covers so much contemporary theatre in both the main languages of expression in the French Caribbean.
Martin Munro, Professor of French and Francophone Studies, Florida State University
